A link to some of my articles on the whys and hows of teaching music.
I have not taken any of Tom’s courses but I am a subscriber to his free newsletter. I’ve gained a few valuable tips from his frequent email correspondence that have helped my teaching quite a bit.

I have not personally read this book but it looks like it could be quite helpful to guitar teachers and quite possibly teachers of other stringed instruments as well. If you find that it is…or isn’t…useful to you, please share your experiences with me. I always love input from readers!
I have not personally read this book either but it looks like it could be quite helpful to aspiring and/or practicing teachers. If you have any personal experience with this writing please share it with me. I love getting feedback from readers!
- Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook: 201 Self-Promotion Ideas for Songwriters, Musicians & Bands on a Budget
Bob baker’s Guerilla Music Marketing Handbook is a must read for professional, independent musicians. Period. Since discovering Bob’s books, blog, and podcast a few years ago my music career has benefitted most wonderfully. All of Bob Baker’s writings and recordings are presented in a accessible and conversational manner. This book gives you 201 ideas for ‘getting your music out there’…AND most of the suggestions in the book involve actions that will cost you from very little to absolutely nothing!
The former CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing, Michael Hyatt is one of the most successful bloggers in the world. His blog, podcasts, and books are invaluable to someone interested in reaching a bigger audience with their message or their product. Platform is a great book in that it distills all of the pertinent strategies and philosophies from Michael’s extensive body of work. It’s well worth the money (I bought the audio version) and also serves as a great introduction to all of the wisdom Michael Hyatt has to offer.
Understanding how to use social media tools like facebook and twitter to grow your fan base is a fundamental part of success both on and offline. Michael Stelzner is the undisputed champion of social media marketing and his podcast is a top notch production full of useful tips for small business owners like you…that’s right, your music career is a business and you should run it like one! Do yourself a favor and take a look at Michael Stelzner’s offerings online.
I’ve already mentioned Bob Baker and his Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook in an earlier recommendation. He’s also got a great podcast, Artist Empowerment Radio, that makes for a nice supplement to the teachings he offers in his books and on his blog.
Don’t forget to subscribe to my Acoustic Living podcast. Each episode is filled with helpful career tips, interviews with successful musicians, and more.
Okay. I’m sure you’ve heard me talk enough about Bob Baker by now but he’s a major voice in the independent music marketing world. His blog, The Buzz Factor, is worth checking out.
Michael Stelzner’s blog. A wealth of useful and relevant information for reaching your audience using social media tools. You certainly want to make a habit out of visiting this site.
- Unlimited Power: The New Science of Personal Achievement
by Anthony Robbins
I grew up making fun of Tony Robbins’ infomercials on late night TV. He seemed like a scammy salesperson just trying to make a buck. In truth, Tony Robbins’ teachings and his products are phenomenal. The title above is my favorite of his books. I don’t necessarily like his sales tactics, but I must say, he is THE authority on creating a better life for yourself. His approach blends elements of science, philosophy, and motivational speaking. Seriously, if you have the same resistance to Tony’s products that I had for years, just give one of his offerings a try. Suspend judgement for a week…give this book (or one of his other products) a chance…it may just change your musical life!
This is truly one of the most fascinating books I’ve ever read. Dr. Chopra has a gift for presenting controversial ideas with a sober and scientific precision that is at once both convincing and inspiring. This book is a mix of scientific theory, techniques, and inspirational ideas. Deepak Chopra has a history as a highly-distinguished medical doctor. He has authored more than 70 books, of which more than 20 have been on the New York Times Best Seller list! If you’re new to the writings of Deepak Chopra, this may be a good place to start.
- Awaken the Genius: Mind Technology for the 21st Century
by Patrick Porter Ph.D
Here’s another helpful read that aims to help the reader become more effective as a thinker and a doer. Awaken the Genius is a good supplement to the ideas in the two titles above and ALSO incorporates some thoughts and advice on related topics including modeling, world view, goal setting, and more.
Diet & Nutrition
Joel Fuhrman is a medical doctor from New Jersey who has worked hard in recent years to educate the public on the importance of natural, nutrient-dense foods in the diet. The book is marketed as a weight loss system but would probably be more aptly described as a book on nutrition education. This is a great read full of great information that can really get you to thinking about the fuel you’re choosing for your body and how it affects your well being.
If the idea of exploring more healthy eating choices is a new (and possibly scary) endeavor for you, then I highly recommend this book as a gentle primer on healthier eating habits. This is not a diet book. Rather than tell you what you shouldn’t eat, this book provides an in depth look at modern nutritional science and tells you what you should eat. Eating Well for Optimum Health even comes with a whole bunch of recipes and suggested daily menus to get you drifting happily in a more healthy direction.
If you want to start adding more uncooked greens, vegetables, and fruits to your diet this is a wonderful resource. Alyssa’s recipes range from the basic to the gourmet. If you’re new to “raw food” world you’ll be absolutely amazed at the culinary possibilities that fall under the heading.
- The Autobiography of a Yogi
by Paramahansa Yogananda
In episode two of the Acoustic Living Podcast, Grant Gordy refers to this book and its author as a major inspiration for his personal, positive philosophy. Text is one part story and one part practical teachings on meditation practices. I have not yet read this book but I have it on order and will leave a more specific review here when I have.
Well, I think the title kind of says it all. This book defines the real mechanics and context of our emotions and how we tend to deal with them. Then, in its second half, You Can Be Happy…offers practical advice and techniques to help you implement your new found knowledge and perspective on happiness.
- The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life
by Deepak Chopra
This is another fabulous book by the brilliant and prolific, Deepak Chopra. This is another example of Dr. Chopra’s unique ability to broach hard to swallow subject matter in a compelling and sound manner. A true treasure chest of valuable insight and information designed to positively change the way you think about yourself and the world and your place within it!
